No Playoffs…….Fisher contract talk…

You’ve got to tip your cap to the Titans for this blog. There is no way we should even be talking about them missing out on the playoffs after an 0-5 start. The Patriots ended those hopes today snapping the Titans 6 game winning streak 40-23. Adding salt to the wound………… Everybody the Titans needed help from helped. The Steelers, Chiefs, and Niners all won. All you can say is they ran into a better team today. The Patriots showed why they have won 4 straight division titles.

As for coach Fisher’s future……… The coach says his option has been exercised and that he and the Titans will now work on a long term deal. That’s the best news is a day were the news is not so good.

Happy New Year everybody!

What A Scene At The Music City Bowl

The 9th Annual Music City Bowl brought out the best in college athletics. Some college football fans are spoiled having a team that goes to a bowl game every year. In the world of Kentucky football that hasn’t been the case. Seven years have passed since Kentucky played in a bowl game and this afternoon in a sea of blue at LP Field the Wildcats knocked the monkey off their backs, getting their first bowl victory since 1984. The job Rich Brooks has done should have Big Blue fans excited about the future and don’t over look the work former Vol and current Kentucky quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders has done with MVP Andre Woodson. The guy was lights out today leading Kentucky to a 28-20 victory over Clemson. The atmosphere, pre-game, during and post-game is what every Bowl Official hopes to achieve. We all know Kentucky fans travel well with the Wildcats basketball team! If they can keep the wins coming in football there is no question big blue fans are more than willing to support a football program too. Do you have any special bowl game moments?

No scores Sunday……Bring a radio or cell phone.

Tonight on the Jeff Fisher show taping the coach all but said other NFL scores will not posted at LP Field Sunday during the Titans game. I think it is a great move. If fans at the game want to find out, they’ll figure out a way with a radio or cell phone. But the players don’t need know if the Bengals or Jaguars are running away with their games. The Titans need to focus on the Patriots and the rest will take care of itself.

Do you like the no NFL scores Sunday at LP Field?

I feel this will be a finger biting Sunday with the Titans, Steelers, and Chiefs winning. Then all eyes will shift to Denver where the 49ers must beat the Broncos for the Titans to get in. My gut tells me the Broncos will win, but after the last six weeks anything is possible and nothing will surprise me.

Don’t forget we’ll complete Titans coverage Sunday night on Sports Extra at 10:35pm.

Happy New Year!

Vince wins AFC award…..

It’s not often a rookie quarterback gets an award, but Vince Young is not your regular rookie quarterback. The Titans 1st round pick named AFC offensive player of the week today. Young accounted for 3 touchdowns and led the Titans on a game winning drive in the 4th quarter Sunday in Buffalo. And here is another mind boggler: Young is the first rookie quarterback in NFL history with 3 rushing and 3 passing touchdowns of 20 yards or more.

Vince was asked today if he likes proving his and the teams critics wrong. He said “I love it”.

Titans Playoff Run….Ask the Coach

It’s as simple and complicated as this: The Titans, Chiefs, Steelers, and Forty Niners have to win Sunday. If that happens the Titans are in the playoffs. If anyone of those teams lose the Titans will not make the playoffs. If you’ve been trying to figure out why the Chiefs need to beat the Jags, since the Titans have the tie breaker over the Jags, it’s a funny thing called a 3-way tie. If the Broncos lose they fall to 9-7 and would win the tie breaker over the Titans with a better conference record. Ah, but the Chiefs own the tie breaker over the Broncos with a better division record. So a Chiefs win means they trump the Broncos. Bring in the 9-7 Titans and the Titans own the tie breaker over the Chiefs with a better division record. That means playoff time for the Titans.

Let’s assume the Titans make the playoffs as the 6th seed. They would go on the road to face the Colts or the Ravens depending on who finishes as the 3rd seed. The Titans don’t care were they go if they make the playoffs.

I still can’t believe I am blogging about the Titans playoff chances the final week of the regular season. Who would have thought that after a 2-7 start.

……….Christmas wishes…

Some Christmas wishes (at least in my world)

Jeff Fisher: An extension on his contract. Possibly a 5 year deal, because this team is on the move. Now if those pesky going to the Cowboys as their head coach rumors would just die.

Vince Young: (This is actually from Vince) Thanking God for everything he has given me. Amen.

Travis Henry: A contract extension as well.

Nashville Predators: For people around Middle Tennessee to come see one game, just one game, and you will be hooked. There is no reason that the GEC should not be sold out on the weekends.

Vandy football: Simple. A bowl game.

Tennessee Football: Simple. To not, not go to a bowl game. Ever again.

Vandy basketball: Well, after kicking our cameraman out of practice last week for showing up early, I am not sure there are enough wishes to make this season one to remember.

MTSU: That they could clone Rick Stockstill.

If you could think of any others, post ‘em…

……..Oh My, Oh My!!

I remember watching the first Titans preseason game against the Saints back in August, thinking oh my! This team is going to be bad, I mean not just bad, but baaaad. I was doing the sideline reports for TV and just thought, this team just doesn’t have it and winning 4 or 5 games would be good. I even did a radio station interview that night for a sports talk station out of Seattle and said the same thing to them. I just didn’t think they had it.

Oh My!

Fast Forward 4 months and after today’s game against the Buffalo Bills, I had to say, Oh My, once again. Oh my, because this team has defied a ton of odds. Messy QB situation, PacMan and all of his antics, then the pressure to start Vince, etc. There was every reason in the world for this team to pack it in and say, see you in 2007.

Oh My!

I am not the biggest Titans fan in the world, I love the Saints but I admire tenacity, and a never say die attitude and ‘us-against the world’ attitude and no one, no one, does it better than Jeff Fisher. He is good leading this team on and off the field.

Really, this team should be happy with 4 wins and look at them, 8 and 7. Winning 6 straight, on the road in Houston, Philadelphia and Buffalo. And doing with an attitude that lays it all on the field, not in the papers, or not on paper.

Oh My!

And add this to the fact. With Vince Young sports fans, we are looking at the next Michael Jordan, talent wise, for football. With MJ, you stopped to watch him. With VY, you stop to watch him just to see what he is going to do next.

Only time will tell.

Oh My!

….A Fun Week Ahead…

If you are the slightest bit of a sports fan, this week in Nashville is for you. We have professional hockey, college football and professional football, plus some college basketball thrown in there.

Tuesday the teams for the music city bowl arrive. Clemson and Kentucky and their fans, 70 thousand of them, will come to Nashville. The bowl game is sold out and downtown should be absolutely nuts. The Predators play at home Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues.

Then Friday, the Music City Bowl takes place at high noon. Clemson and Kentucky and look for a big UK upset, but you never know.

Then Saturday night, the Preds take the ice again, taking on the Boston Bruins, one of the legendary teams of the NHL. Then Sunday, another Boston team arrives, the New England Patriots and depending on what the Titans and Pats do on Sunday, this game could be huge and might even be switched to a national night game.

Not bad for a team just two months ago, was ranked as the worst team in the league.

Good times all around!

………….36 years of pain and healing…

Sometimes sports and life go hand and hand and one a lot of times, impacts the other.

Friday, a movie opened up that some are calling the next ‘Hoosiers.” A movie that has tested higher for Warner Brothers studios than any other movie according to some reports.

The movie, ‘We are Marshall.” Detailing the tragic death of the Marshall football team and their rise from the ashes, for what a lot of people said would never happened.

And as always, there is a Nashville connection.

Marti-Carelli Gilbert’s husband, Al Carelli, was the offensive line coach for Marshall. Sadly, Al died in the plane crash, leaving Marti and her two small sons, one 3, the other 3 months. Her oldest son, Vince and I, played college football together and I always knew about his father and now, 36 years later the story is being told.

Marti lives in Auburntown, right outside of Mufreesboro. She has started a camp for grandparents and grandkids where they come together and spend quality time in the outdoors with no cell phones, no pagers, no texting, no tv, just simple quality time together.

Her website is www.grandmascampusa.com. Go there and see what she has done to make something remarkable out of something so tragic. There is still a long way to go for Marti’s dream, but this dream is slowly becoming a reality.

PLAYOFF TALK……ASK THE COACH

The Titans and Bills in a playoff elimination game Sunday in Buffalo. One thing sports reporters haven’t been able to get this week is the Titans talking about the playoffs. They just won’t go there. But tonight on the Jeff Fisher show tapnig I asked the coach if I gave him a lie detector test and asked him if he’s looked at playoff scenarios, what would he say.

The coach said “of course I have, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to talk about them with you or my team”. Classic!

You can see the entire Titans on 2 with Jeff Fisher Friday night at 7pm on Channel 2.

Merry Christmas everybody,

Chris
