TITANS SELECT 10 IN 2007 NFL DRAFT

Another year, another draft! This year’s has most Titans fans scratching their heads. Michael Griffin is a great player and even though there is a need in the secondary, many felt there were bigger needs at other positions. Six of the 10 picks were on offense, half of them are wide receivers. Paul Williams, Chris Davis & Joel Filani are not big names but they all can contribute in different ways. Filani can work the outside, Williams can go inside, while Davis is a speedster that will contribute more on special teams. Leroy Harris & Mike Otto were high on the Titans board for Offensive Lineman. Running back Chris Henry came on strong his senior season once he was healthy and will give Lendale White a run for his money to start.

Defensive Tackle Antonio Johnson doesn’t have much playing experience, but all of his upsides will make Jeese Mahelona compete even harder. Look for Jacob Ford to add much needed speed on the outside of the line. The surprise could be Florida cornerback Ryan Smith who had 8 interceptions last season.

So hard to grade this class! In Michael Griffin you know what your going to get, the others we will have to wait and see. Another key date for the Titans is June 1st, that’s when all the salary cap cuts will come flying in. Here’s a list of the Titans 2007 Draft Class.

“HOW WOULD YOU GRADE THEM”?

1 19 Michael Griffin FS 6-0 195 Texas
2 50 Chris Henry RB 6-0 228 Arizona
3 80 Paul Williams WR 6-1 209 Fresno State
4 115 Leroy Harris C 6-2 298 N.C. State
4 128 (From Baltimore) Chris Davis WR 5-10 181 Florida State
5 152 Antonio Johnson DT 6-3 305 Miss. State
6 188 Joel Filani WR 6-2 216 Texas Tech
6 204 (From San Diego) Jacob Ford DE 6-4 249 Central Arkansas
6 206 (From Indianapolis) Ryan Smith CB 5-10 168 Florida
7 223 Michael Otto OT 6-5 308 Purdue

Titans Take Texas Safety Michael Griffin..

The Titans shocked just about everybody by picking Texas Safety Michael Griffin with the 19th overall pick.

Two names that have popped up in conversation Ronnie Lott and Mike Minter. If Griffin is even close to either of these guys the Titans hit a home run.

Griffin can play both safety positions and has cornerback speed. He’s also a special teams whiz setting a record at Texas with 8 blocked kicks.

He’s 6-0 200lbs with 4.47 speed in the 40 and a 36 inch vertical.

However, the Titans passed up WR’s Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, and Dwayne Jarrett to name a few. But, there are still plenty of WR’s on the board for the 2nd round. The Titans pick 50th.

Don’t forget our NFL Draft Special at 6pm on News 2. Eddie George and Chris Sanders will join me to breakdown the draft. Joe Dubin will join us live from the Titans complex.

What do you think of the Griffin pick?

Turner Talk Heating Up……….

ESPN is reporting that Chargers RB Michael Turner could be traded to an unidentified NFL team. The report does not say who that team is but Chargers GM A.J. Smith said the Titans and Bills are two of the teams interested. The report says the Chargers are being offered a 1st round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Titans have not commented on this report.

As I said last night on News 2 at 10pm. Turner will be traded before or during the NFL Draft. The clock is ticking and the Titans still need another RB. I say pull the trigger. Would you?

Chargers sign Turner……..Get ready for a trade…..

The Chargers signed RB Michael Turner to a one year contract tonight for $2.3 million. In English this means the Chargers will trade Turner to the highest bidder.

There is no question the Titans are interested in Turner, they just didn’t want to give up a 1st and 3rd pick to get him before he re-signed with SD. Now that you don’t have to give up a 1st and 3rd rounder I say get it done and get it done now!

Turner would not only make the Titans better on the field, but it would motivate LenDale White to do what Floyd Reese told me this week “make football his top priority”. White does not make most Titans fans warm and fuzzy when they see him as the #1 back.

What would you give up for Turner? He’s worth at least a 2nd rounder this year and next. I don’t think you give up this years 1st rounder or next years for that matter.

What would you give up for Turner?

Reinfeldt’s Draft History………DEFENSE

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt will run his first NFL Draft Saturday. But he’s played a large role in several drafts. Most recently he was part of Seattle’s draft since 1999. So I decided to check out the Seahawks draft history with Reinfeldt on their payroll. What I found was a whole lot of defense.

In the first two rounds the last four years the Seahawks did not draft one skilled player on offense. Of those 8 picks Seattle drafted 7 defensive players. The only offensive player they drafted in the 1st round was Center Chris Spencer in 2005.

Keep this in mind. The Seahawks picked Koren Robinson #1 in the 2001 draft. Robinson has been bust due to a plethora of off the field issues. Maybe Reinfeldt is gun shy when it comes to picking a WR in the 1st round. I’m starting to lean towards the Titans picking defense with #19.

Your thoughts?

Floyd Reese on News 2……..

With the NFL Draft right around the corner who better to talk about what the Titans should do than former GM Floyd Reese.

You can see the entire interview Saturday night at 6pm on our News 2 NFL Draft Special. Or you can catch bits and pieces this week on News 2 at 6&10pm.

You can also check out the interview by clicking on Sports Vids at the top right of this screen.

Reese said something interesting. He seems to think to Titans will go Cornerback or Defensive End with the 1st pick. What do you think? I still think they need a WR.

Brandan Wright Is NBA Bound

Brandan Wright enjoyed playing for Roy Williams and knew North Carolina could contend for a nationalchampionship next season. He just couldn’t pass on the chance to
take care of his family by entering the NBA draft.
“I was definitely torn in my decision,” the freshman said
Monday during a news conference. “There are so many positives and
negatives in me entering the draft. But I feel like the positives
outweigh the negatives.”
The 6-foot-9 forward’s decision didn’t come as a big surprise
considering he is projected to be a high pick. And while Wright
said he doesn’t intend to sign with an agent yet - a move that
would keep open the possibility of a return to school next year -
Williams said the 19-year-old was almost certain to remain in the
draft.
“I think the decision is 99.99 (percent) that this is what he’s
going to do,” Williams said. “It’s not that he’s trying to get
more research or anything like that.”
Williams said his research determined that Wright was a sure
top-10 pick who could reach as high as third. But considering he
weighs just 205 pounds, Wright knows he’ll have to bulk up to get
ready for the NBA.
“Personally I feel like I can come to a team and do a lot of
good things,” he said. “I’m going to work like crazy this summer
to get ready for the rigors of a long 82-game season. I feel like
I’ll be ready next year. It should be fun.”
Wright becomes the 15th player to leave the program early for
the NBA draft, joining notable names like James Worthy, Michael
Jordan, Jerry Stackhouse and Vince Carter. But unlike two years ago
- when the Tar Heels lost four underclassmen after winning the
national championship - North Carolina is losing just one.

Titans Draft………What would you do?

Ok folks, the NFL Draft is this Saturday and nobody really knows what anybody is going to do.

What will Titans do? Will they trade up or down? Will they stay at 19? Will they take a WR or try to find a RB or Cornerback to replace Pacman Jones?

Here is your chance to play Mike Reinfieldt.

What would you do with the 19th overall pick?

I would trade this years 1st round pick and next years 1st round pick with the Detroit Lions IF the Raiders don’t take Calvin Johnson. I would then take Calvin Johnson. Johnson and Vince Young would then go on to be the next Jerry Rice and Steve Young. The greatest QB-WR tandem in NFL history.

Now it’s your turn to play GM on draft day.

And You Were Worried!!!!! Dores Sweep Vols

Set backs are apart of any sport, you just hope they don’t happen during the wrong time of the year. Vanderbilt Commodore fans didn’t know what to expect heading into this weekend series against Tennessee and for good reason. The nations top ranked team lost two straight to local non-conference foes Lipscomb and MTSU. Call it a mid-season slump or a much needed wake up call, but what ever Tim Corbin said to his Dores they responded like a national championship contender.
In front of the largest crowd to watch a baseball game at Hawkins Field on Saturday, Vandy’s David Price pitched a gem in game one…..defense and pitching won game two….while a nail bitter in game 3 ended in the bottom of the ninth breaking a 6 all tie to help the Dores earn their first series sweep of the season.
There may have been plenty of questions before this weekend. I believe they were answered!
Vanderbilt improves to 12-6 in conference play and 35-8 overall.
