Titans Sign Simon. Add depth to D-Line.

The Titans added some needed depth to the defensive line today. Corey Simon practiced with the Titans this afternoon. It is not clear whether or not he’ll play Thursday night against the Packers in the preseason finale. Here is the release from the Titans. You can hear from Simon, Jeff Fisher, and other Titans about the former pro bowler coming to town on News 2 at 6 and 10pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 28, 2007

TITANS AGREE TO TERMS WITH
DT COREY SIMON

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms on a contract with free agent defensive tackle Corey Simon today.

The 6-foot-2, 320-pound lineman joins the Titans after spending the 2005-06 campaigns with the Indianapolis Colts. He played his first five NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Corey brings a combination of run-stuffing size and pass rushing ability to the defensive tackle position,” said Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt. “Prior to last season, he has been a consistent and productive player who contributed to playoff teams and we are excited to see him get a second chance here with the Titans to prove he still has that ability.”

In 91 career games, Simon has accumulated totals of 311 tackles, 32 sacks, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 16 passes defensed. Additionally, he has been a member of playoff teams in each of his seven NFL seasons, including Eagles teams that made four consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances and advanced to Super Bowl XXXIX. His career playoff totals include 40 tackles and one sack in 13 games.
Simon played a total of 13 games for the Colts. In 2006, he was inactive for the first four games of the regular season and spent the remainder of the year on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness/Injury list. In 2005, he started 13 games and produced 41 tackles, one forced fumble and one pass defensed.

Simon, who went to the Eagles as the sixth-overall draft choice in 2000, started all but two games in his five seasons in Philadelphia, including a rookie campaign in which he set career highs with 74 tackles and 9.5 sacks. In 2003, he was named to his first Pro Bowl after contributing 64 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

A native of Tallahassee, Fla., Simon earned four letters at Florida State and was a consensus All-American during the Seminoles’ 1999 National Championship season.

Titans release 7. Looks like Running Back by committee.

Jeff Fisher did not flat out say it’s a final decision, but today after practice he said “you can assume” the Titans will use a RB by committee when the Titans open up in Jacksonville. Chris Brown and LenDale White will be a two headed horse unless one of them gets really hot. You can hear what LenDale White thinks about that on Sunday Sports Extra tonight at 10:35pm

The Titans also cut seven player today. The official release is below and there are no big surprises. But I will say Jermaine McElveen looked very good in several practices and notched a 1/2 sack Friday in Buffalo. We’ll see his name pop up sometime down the road.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 26, 2007

TITANS WAIVE SEVEN

NASHVILLE, TENN. - The Tennessee Titans waived the following players in anticipation of Tuesday’s 75-player roster limit deadline: DT Quartez Vickerson, OL Marques Ogden, S Brandon Sharp, TE Andy Thorn, WR Jonathan Orr, DE Jermaine McElveen and P Glenn Pakulak. The Titans will need to trim their roster by one more player prior to Tuesday afternoon

Time for Buffalo……. 6pm Friday on News 2…

The Titans are off to Buffalo Thursday afternoon. They play the Bills Friday night at 6pm on News 2.

Here’s what you can expect Friday night:

-Vince Young and 1st team offense will play into the 2nd half.
-Keith Bulluck and the defense will play into the 2nd half.
-Michael Griffin will start at cornerback. Expect to see the Titans line him up across from Lee Evans. This will be a great measuring stick on whether or not Griffin is ready for primetime on an island.
-Chris Brown should start at RB. Unless he falls on his face I expect Brown to be the Titans starting RB in Jacksonville.
-The Titans need to find a kickoff returner. So far Michael Griffin has looked the best. He’ll get more chances Friday night.
-The fight for starting Middle Linebacker is still strong. Stephen Tulluch leads the team with 10 preseason tackles. But Jim Schwartz has not made a final decision.

Enjoy the game.

Griffin works with 1st team defense……..

Titans 1st round pick Michael Griffin worked with the 1st team defense at Titans Camp today. Griffin picked off two passes Friday in New England and has shown great improvement after being moved from safety to cornerback. Coach Fisher said today that he wants Griffin to get some work in with the first team. He may get Griffin some playing time with them this Friday at Buffalo.

I think Griffin is even surprising the Titans by his rapid improvement from safety to cornerback. Two weeks this did not look possible. But that’s why they practice folks. And you can see it on the field. Griffin is playing with an attitude.

To think the Titans will have a problem deciding on who will start at cornerback seems years removed from the Pacman debacle. Who’s to say Griffin and Finnegan won’t be the Titans starting cornerbacks in Jacksonville September 9th? We’ll likely see Harper start, but you never know…..

Who do you think should start at corner?

Local Hoops night announced.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky will play host to the first Sun Belt Classic, Dec. 15 at the Sommet Center in Nashville.

The Sun Belt Classic will have national appeal as Middle Tennessee will face Memphis at 6 p.m., in a game that will be televised on ESPN2, while WKU faces Tennessee at 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Many college basketball prognosticators feel both Memphis and Tennessee will compete strongly for a national title and could be ranked among the top five in the country. Sun Belt East Division rivals Middle Tennessee and WKU are expected to contend for the league championship.

“We are eagerly anticipating the national exposure two of our schools will receive on ESPN2 and ESPNU on Dec. 15,” said Wright Waters, Sun Belt Conference Commissioner. “It is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase two of our outstanding universities. The match-ups against two likely highly-ranked teams will be a challenge, but the best way to measure yourself is to compete against the best teams in the country.

“I give our schools credit for scheduling these games and thank ESPN for televising each of them in prime time. The Sun Belt Conference is really excited about playing this unique basketball doubleheader on a national stage.”

The games are home contests for Middle Tennessee and WKU, and Blue Raider basketball coach Kermit Davis believes his team will be facing the preseason No. 1 team in America when it tips against the Tigers.

“On top of fans being able to see two quality basketball games in the doubleheader, it will be great exposure for our team to play what I believe will be the preseason No. 1 team in America on national television,” Davis said. “It’s a great day for Sun Belt basketball to be on a national stage with two Top 5 programs in the country, and for Middle Tennessee to be associated with three really good programs in WKU, Memphis, and Tennessee, as well as three outstanding head coaches. It is going to be a fun night and we believe we will set the record that night for the most people ever to see Middle Tennessee play a home basketball game.”

WKU basketball coach Darrin Horn said the doubleheader is further evidence of the league’s commitment to bolster its basketball product nationally.

“We are excited about being a part of a big-time college basketball event such as this doubleheader,” said Horn. “I think it demonstrates both institutions and the Sun Belt’s Conference’s commitment to growing and being recognized as national players in college basketball. It should be a great day of tournament atmosphere basketball, not just for the school’s fans, but basketball fans throughout South Central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.”

Tickets for the event will be $30 for lower level seats and $15 for upper level seats. A ticket to the doubleheader will be included in Middle Tennessee’s and WKU’s season ticket packages. Season ticket holders will be given first priority.

UT Suspends Coker

Tune in tonight at 10pm for more from Phil Fulmer and Quarterback Eric Ainge.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee tailback LaMarcus Coker, the
team’s leading rusher last season, has been suspended indefinitely.
Coach Phillip Fulmer did not specify Tuesday what Coker had done
to earn the penalty.
“He must fulfill some obligations to the program and to me
before he can return,” Fulmer read from a prepared statement after
practice. “I have tried, as has the administration, to work with
him, but at this time he must help himself.”
The sophomore led the Vols with 696 rushing yards his freshman
year, even though he was sidelined for two games by an injured
knee. He was competing for time with junior Arian Foster and
sophomore Montario Hardesty.
Coker, who had a pair of touchdown runs for more than 80 yards
each last season, was suspended for several practices last December
for undisclosed reasons.
