Titans in NOLA
Gotta say that I first fell in love with New Orleans in college when I went to several Mardi Gras and suprisingly enough, I remember the trips. Have been back several times in the 90’s and then in 2000 but haven’t been back since. I remember seeing all of the damage that Katrina did 2 years ago and was just stunned that it was the same city.
Fast forward 2 years and I am back in the city that I adore as the Titans get ready to take on the Saints for last Monday night’s game.
We arrived at the airport around 7:30 and a police escort takes 5 buses filled with the Titans players and coaches and guests of the team to our hotel downtown. When we arrived there were a couple of hundred Titans fans waiting for the team at the hotel. They were there mainly to see one person, Vince Young, and when he got off the bus, you gotta small feeling what it was like to be with the Beatles when they hit America in February of 64.
Pandemonium! Flash bulbs, screams, hollers, etc, for the team and Vince.
With several security guards and New Orleans policemen at the hotel, the Titans went to the their rooms and about their business. About half of the crowd left but the other half stayed around just hoping to catch a glimpse of someone.
My favorite line was when several of us got off the elevator, and someone said, ‘who is that? Oh, wait, nobody.’ Classic!
Monday was spent at the hotel because it was pouring down rain in the city, nullifying a chance to get out and see several sites that I have wanted to see. A lot of people took a tour of the Lower 9th Ward that was hit so hard by hurricane Katrina.
Then the time arrived to go to the Superdome and I have never in my life seen so much tailgaiting, so far away from the stadium. At LP, they are in the parking lots surrounding the stadium, in New Orleans, they were several blocks away in all directions, must have been thousands of people tailgating.
As the bus pulled up at the Dome, we were stopped in front of a ton of Saints fans. They all gave us that number one sign, if you know what I am saying, and away we went into the dark bowels of the Superdome.
We do an interview with the coach at 5:45 that we have to feed back for our special starting at 7 and talking to Jeff Fisher, he seemed like he was on vacation. Very cool, very calm, not a worry in the world. For some odd reason, I had a feeling that they were going to crush the Saints because he knew something that a lot of people didn’t know, obviously, and he was just waiting for the game to start.
And once it did, it was over from the very first drive, even though they didn’t score and it was close at halftime. The Titans were just blowing the Saints off the ball, both on the offense and the defense and in the end, that was the difference as they just pounded a very uninspired Saints team. (Even though there were 70,000 in the dome and was as loud as any stadium I have ever heard), the Saints still couldn’t put it together.
As you may imagine, the Titans locker room was excited but very humble. No one going crazy, and as one player told me, ‘It was a simple business trip. We got the job done and we are ready to come home.’
And home they arrived at 2 am from the Big Easy. As we got in the car to head back to the station, a national radio show was on, talking about what is wrong with the Saints. Not once did they mention the Titans or Vince, or Keith Bulluck with 3 interceptions but as Kevin Mawae said after the game, ‘We don’t care if anyone talks about us all year. That way we will just keep playing our game and as long as they are talking about us come February, that will be fine.’
Time will certainly tell.

Titans make trade….
The Titans made a fairly big trade today adding a lot of depth to an already solid defensive line. We’ll talk with coach Fisher about it tonight on Titans on 2 with Jeff Fisher at 7pm.
Here’s the Titans official release:
TITANS ACQUIRE DE FISHER IN TRADE
NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Tennessee Titans acquired DE Bryce Fisher for an undisclosed draft pick in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks today. Fisher joins the Titans after spending the last two seasons in Seattle. Prior to joining the Seahawks, he played three seasons with the St. Louis Rams (2002-2004) and one campaign with the Buffalo Bills (2001).
“He has a lot of the attributes that you look for in a base defensive end - someone who plays the run, has the ability to rush the passer and can play either side,” said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. “I expect him to fit well in our system and add to the depth that we are building in the defensive line.”
“This is a good addition to our team in a number of ways,” said Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. “He has been a productive and durable player through the years and a player that we have had interest in for a number of years. I look forward to adding him to our defensive line mix.”
Fisher has played in 82 career games with 49 starts and has registered 261 tackles (159 solo), 26.5 sacks, 13 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in seven NFL seasons. The 6-foot-3-inch, 265-pound defensive end also has excelled in the playoffs, collecting 29 tackles (17 solo), 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in eight career postseason contests. Fisher enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Rams in 2004 when he notched a career-high 77 tackles (38 solo) and 8.5 sacks. After signing as an unrestricted free agent prior to 2005 with the Seahawks, he collected a career-best 9.0 sacks and eight pass defensed in his first season in Seattle. Last season, the seven-year veteran started all 16 games for the Seahawks and registered 46 tackles (37 solo) and four sacks. He saw action in a reserve role in the Seattle’s opener against Tampa Bay last week but did not record any statistics.
Fisher was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round (240th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft. After fulfilling a two-year active duty commitment with the Air Force, he joined the Bills for the 2001 season and notched three sacks. The Renton, Wash., native was a two-year starter at the Air Force Academy and earned WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Mountain Division as a senior after posting 70 tackles, six sacks and a fumble recovery.
To make room on the roster for Fisher, DT Jesse Mahelona was released.

What to expect Sunday in Jacksonville…..
There’s nothing a opening weekend in the NFL. For the Titans there is no better way to see how far they’ve come than a trip to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s hometown.
Is the defense better than last year? We’ll know after Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew…..
I think the Titans will put 8 in the box and say “beat us”. The Jags are not strong at WR. The Titans won’t be able to shut down the Jags running attack. But if they can keep it somewhat in check it will be a good day.
What about wide receivers? I think Eric Moulds will have a huge day and help VY move the chains. Moulds was quiet in preseason, but that’s typical for seasoned vets like Moulds. He’s still got a lot in tank, especially with a QB like VY throwing him the ball.
What about Running Back? If LenDale White and Chris Brown can get through the Jags huge D-Line on a regular basis the Titans will come back with a win.
Titans special teams…….. Fisher has done a great job of keeping his plans secret, but I feel Cortland Finnegan will return punts. This could be a game of field position and the Titans can win that battle.
Rob Bironas may come back to Nashville with another game winner………
Don’t forget we’ll be in Jacksonville with the Titans and we’ll have exclusive 1-on-1’s with Jeff Fisher and Kyle Vanden Bosch Sunday nigh at 10:35pm on Sports Extra.

Titans Make Cuts. Lamont Thompson the biggest name let go.
The Titans have their roster down to 53 players. Most of the final cuts were not a big surprise. But when a pro like Lamont Thompson is cut it makes you think twice about how tough it is to make it in the NFL. Thompson had a great camp and preseason, but the Titans are loaded at safety and it became a numbers game with younger players making a lot less money than Thompson. Thompson is a class, and I mean class act! Even if he doesn’t get picked up by another team he’s got life figured out off the field…….. He’ll be fine.
Here is the official release by the Titans:
TITANS WAIVE 20 PLAYERS;
PLACE GIVENS ON PUP
NASHVILLE, TENN. - The Tennessee Titans waived the following players to reach the 53-player roster limit: S Lamont Thompson, WR Courtney Roby, QB Tim Rattay, RB Quinton Ganther, LB Spencer Toone, CB Ryan Smith, OL Justin Geisinger, WR Joel Filani, RB Dontrell Moore, OL Isaac Snell, T Mike Otto, LB Terna Nande, LB Colin Allred, TE Cooper Wallace, DE Josh Savage, DE Jason Hall, TE Jamie Petrowski, T Seth Wand, S Bryan Scott and DT Lauvale Sape (injured).
The Titans also placed WR David Givens on the Reserve/PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which restricts his availability until after week six of the season. Additionally, DT Rien Long was placed on injured reserve.
Statement from Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher:
“Because of how the roster has improved, the process was a challenge, and the last three or four spots were really difficult considering we let a number of veterans go. These decisions were a result of the depth of our roster and the production and potential of some of the younger players on the team. The numbers at some of the positional groups didn’t allow us the luxury of keeping three quarterbacks, but that shouldn’t be a reflection of Tim (Rattay) and his ability to contribute to a team. I expect to see a number of these players end up with other teams and have significant roles and I hope the door remains open for some of them to return to our roster if the opportunity presents itself.”
Statement from Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt:
“Getting down to 53 is a hard and emotional procedure. This year it was particularly difficult at some position groups, but I was pleased with how we worked through the process. We will continue to look over our roster and the players that become available today and evaluate if we can improve our roster over the next couple of days.”
