Way To Go Sully!

Congratulations to Steve Sullivan tonight for making Predators history. He’s the first Pred to ever win an NHL post season award.

Sully was honored tonight with the Bill Masterton Trophy for Perserverence and it was well deserved. With everyone doubting he’d ever play again, he proved them all wrong. After 2 long years of surgery and rehabilitation Sullivan returned to the Preds line up this season to score 11 goals and notch 21 assists.

It’s just further proof of the power of positive thinking. Now, I’m using my positive thoughts on a new contract that brings Sully back to Nashville this season.
Way to go Steve!!!!

Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

OK, I’ve heard all of the complaints about baseball and I acknowledge many of them are fair, but the homerun is still one of the most exciting moments in sports.

The Cubs trailed the White Sox today 5-1 in the 8th when in Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto went back to back with a 3-run homer and a solo shot to suddenly tie the game at 5. The Cubs added 1 in the 9th to win 6-5. Wrigley Field went from a mortuary to a madhouse in the span of about 4 pitches and it was absolutely thrilling theater.

Sure it’s a 3 hour game, but if you turn away you’ll miss the moment!

The 2 Vinces

I know… ANOTHER Vince Young post. I was sending some video to ESPN today when something struck me, there are 2 completely different perceptions of V-Y out there. There’s the national and the local.

Locally, there are a few who still think he’s destined to lead the Titans to greatness, but as a whole in Middle Tennessee most feel he’ll never be this teams quarterback again and will be cut loose after this season.

Nationally, there seems to still be this feeling that Young is just waiting his turn, learning on the job and will eventually take over for Kerry Collins.

That means 1 of 2 things, either we’re too close to the trees to see thru the forest or we just call it like we see it. What are you seeing and how are you calling it?

Choices

Life is pretty simple, it’s about choices.  We make thousands of them every day.  Most of them seem meaningless, but once in a while we are faced with some that can create a life altering change of events.

Drinking and driving is that decisions for thousands upon thousands every day.  I’m not here to preach, but to point out that it’s a simple decision.  NFL star Donte Stallworth is just the latest to make that massive error in judgement.  Reports are he’s pleading guilty to DUI Manslaughter for killing a man in Florida and is likely headed for prison.

It’s inexcusable for anyone to get behind the wheel, but how many times do we have to see it to get the message?  Stallworth like most professional athletes has the money to have a cab, limo or professional driver whenever he needs one and he’s seen this mistake happen before.  I just can’t wrap my head around why he would risk it all?

Ahhh, Vince....

Vince Young is finally opening up….in an interview with ESPN’s Michael Smith that will air at the end of July on E:60, Young talks about the incident after his injury this past fall.

He called the entire event, when the Nashville police were out looking for him because his mom was worried that he might harm himself….embarrasing.

I agree, but why wait until now to come out and talk about it? All of us in the local media around here have tried over and over to get one-on-one interviews with Young, giving him a chance to explain himself, maybe even shed some positive light on himself as a person. We’ve always been turned down.

In this interview with ESPN, he even said he thought about quitting, saying “I was to the point where man, I didn’t really want to play no more because of the fact that I was that hurt. That I was that hurt from the boos and all the different things that were going on. It was just so much for me-I didn’t want to play no more. I don’t think any other person in the world can handle all the pressure that was put on my shoulders that night or day.”

Really? Guys in his position deal with pressure like that constantly. Ask Donovan Mcnabb how it feels to be booed by your own fans. That all goes with the job and the big paycheck. Just like everything in life, it’s what have you done for me lately.

It’s simple…Young had to face adversity for the first time ever in his career, and he failed miserably. Someone who says he thought about quitting because he got booed can not be a team leader. This newest sit down with Michael Smith on ESPN is Vince’s attempt (late attempt at that) to redeem himself, and while I think it helps Young to face the criticism and talk about his situation, the best way for him to resurrect his career is through his actions and play, not his words.

Smith asks him at the end of his interview, looking back, what he thought about the decisions he made during that situation last fall. Vince resonds, “I was young, immature. If I get booed again I know how to handle it because I mean it’s a learning process.”

WAS young and immature? Don’t get me wrong, I like Vince Young as a person, he’s always been friendly to us, but he needs to show that he has matured. After listening to some of this interview…he’s just not ready to lead a team yet.

.......Please, Please, build a new stadium for the Sounds

I Know, I know, I know that this topic has been debated again and again and there are both pros and cons to it but put me in the pro’s category.

Case in point, Saturday night, nearly 9,000 people showed up to see the Nashville Sounds take on the Memphis Redbirds…..It was loud, it was packed and it was a great environment and while I was looking around at a dinosaur of a stadium, I wondered what it would have been like if that stadium was downtown, on the river and with the CMA Music Fest going on, what a great night it would have been.

Hopefully, things can get worked out and that vacant area, where it has been vacant for about 5 years, earing the city NOTHING, ZERO, ZILCH, can be turned into a nice downtown stadium and park.  Just ask the Memphis Redbirds about having a downtown stadium, it can do wonders.

.......Vince, Vince, and More Vince...

The guy asked, ‘why do you guys continue to report on Vince Young, when he is the Titans backup quarterback?’  Great question but this isn’t just your ordinary backup QB.  This is a guy the Titans paid nearly $30 Million dollars to be their starter.  This is also a guy who came off the greatest single performance in College Bowl history.  Take all of that, plus what happened last year when he ‘pulled’ himself out of the opening game against the Jags, and you see this is not just some ordinary back up.

We call the stories about the Titans ‘remote proof.’  Meaning, a lof of people and fans in Middle Tennessee have invested a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money, supporting the NFL team.  So as long as Vince keeps talking and making news, he will be on tv.

1 To Go!

Kobe Bryant and the Lakers stand just 1 win from another NBA Championship after last nights overtime thriller over the Magic.

There are a few great storylines to this one.  Phil Jackson would have his 10th NBA Title as a head coach and it would be Bryant’s 4th championship, but first without Shaquille O’Neal at his side.  Despite whatever personal feelings you may have about Bryant he is an amazing talent and his effort and desire could be the best since Michael Jordan’s.

One negative from last night.  If Dwight Howard wants to be superstart he has to be able to hit a free throw.  He hits just 1 late and the series is all tied up at 2.  Hopefully, this off season he’ll use as a learning experience.  He’s a great player, but has to take it to yet, one more level.

Enjoy game 5!  You’ll see it on News 2!

Stop The Insanity!

Will he or won’t he? Brett Favre continues to dance around the subject of his return even though all of his actions point to a clear cut, yes.

He’s had surgery on his injured arm and now a report shows his family has reserved up to 30 rooms for the Packers-Vikings at Lambeau Field.

Actions speak louder than words, there’s no need to hide, just admit it, you’re coming back. The games are getting old!
