Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher

OK, just to clear up any confusion Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher returns to its NORMAL time tonight at 7:00 PM on News 2. The program will air in this slot for the remainder of the NFL season.
Tonight’s player-guest is First Round Pick Kenny Britt. Once again we are live from Opry Mills Mall. Hope you enjoy the show!

Time To Panic For Titans?

3 games, 3 losses for the Titans and 3 games they led in the 4th quarter. Jeff Fisher and company are insisting it is NOT time to panic. Well, if now is not the time when is?

For a team that made a living on finding a way to live, they’ve found a new way to lose each of the first three. They had the Jets beat today! Hang on to the ball or put one more touchdown on the board and it was over, because after the 1st quarter they were in complete control.

Each week I watch and I wonder, what the heck is going on? I wish I had the answer or got one from the lockerroom that made sense.

Titans On 2 With Jeff Fisher

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on programming tonight. We are taping Titans on 2 With Jeff Fisher live at its normal time, 7 to 8 PM tonight (Tuesday) at Opry Mills, but the show will not air until Wednesday at 6:30 PM.

We apologize for any inconvenience, just a programming move that had to be made. Next week the Coach’s Show returns to its normal time.

Thanks!!!

Titans Newest Problem, Finger Pointing

It’s easy to be a winner. I always tell people you find a person’s true character when “it” hits the fan. Two games into the NFL season the Tennessee Titans are failing that test.

0-2 is certainly not a place any of the Titans expected to be, but Sunday we started to see the first signs of fractioning in the lockerroom and discontent among the players. The Titans gave up 350 yards passing and 4 TD’s during the game, but Chuck Cecil wasn’t done getting torced, after it was over one his own players took a shot. Nick Harper told me “We didn’t make any corrections on the sideline. There wer some plays where I got it on my side, they flip-flopped to the exact same play on the other side and we still didn’t get it stopped! Like I said, we didn’t make any corrections on the sideline. They made corrections and they hurt us!”

That’s as straight forward as a player is. “Sideline” means coaches in case there was any confusion. Harper and the entire secondary are obviously angry, confused and probably embarassed at this point. Lou Holtz use to have a great saying, “Car’s in the ditch, who’s going to get out and push?”. That’s what Harper missed out on. The car’s in the ditch, blaming someone for it doesn’t work, it’s time to get out and push and push as one.

Everyone's An Expert

It’s true. We’ve all sat on the sofa and second guessed the coaching staff. It doesn’t matter who… Lombardi, Ditka, Parcells… For some reason we all think WE KNOW BETTER! Here’s the shocker, we don’t.

There was plenty of second guessing after the Titans loss to the Steelers last week. Chris Johnson only ran the ball 15 times, special teams struggled and the pass rush fizzled in the second half. For the last 4 days I’ve heard everyone bemoaning a lack of aggressiveness from Defensive Coordinator Chuck Cecil. “He should have blitzed, brought the corner, brought Bulluck…”, take your pick I’ve heard it all.

Just a hunch here, Chuck Cecil has forgotten more about defense than any of us will ever, ever know. I’m not here to protect him, I’m sure there are calls he’d like to have back, but the man knows what he’s doing. After the game he was explaining than in the chess game of football the blitz is just one move, a move offenses have an answer too, the question is can you handle their answer?

On 3rd and 12 with 5 minutes to play the Titans rushed only 3, got no pressure and Big Ben completed a 15 yard strike to Santonio Holmes for a critical first down. Go ahead and blame the pass rush, but they had 8 men in coverage who also could have made a play and made Cecil look like a genius.

I guess that’s the point I’m here to make, blitz or no blitz, it’s about making plays. Every defense is designed to work, it’s up to the players to make it happen. Oh, and as everyone in the NFL likes to point out, the other side gets paid to make plays too and last I saw the Steelers are the defending Super Bowl champs.

It’s just one game, bring on the Texans.

Go Ahead And Vent

As last night went on I kept thinking the same thing to myself, “Cory, you’ve seen this game before.” I had and it ended exactly the same way. Just like the Titans dominated their playoff game with Baltimore last season they watched every opportunity slide by in Pittsburgh and they suffered another heartbreaking defeat.

The Titans are a Super Bowl caliber team, but to get there this nonsense has to end and they know it. They have to finish drives offensively and defensively and finish teams off. They let Big Ben hang around and he made them pay.

Don’t get me wrong, the Steelers are a great team, the Super Bowl champs, but no one can convince me they’re the better team. Not after last year and not after last night. What they are though is a team that knows how to finish and they’ve got a 1-0 record to prove it.

Play It Smart... Washington Has to Sit

He was the Titans big move in free agency and I know what you’re thinking “Nate Washington has to play!” Games like this one against the Steelers are exactly the reason they signed him right? Wrong. They signed him to win the Super Bowl!

The schedule is a 16 game marathon and this is just 1 of 16. It may have all the hype, but it’s worth no more and no less than any of the others. Remember last year? They played without Albert Haynesworth, yet somehow that worked out.

Hamstring’s are tricky injuries and can linger for an entire season if not dealt with. Playing this game on a Thursday plays a huge part in this decision. It gives him 3 fewer days to heal and by sitting him they give him 10 extra days to heal for the Texans and the other 15 games on the schedule.

This is “A” big game, but “THE” big game is in February and it’s more important that Nate Washington be on the field in Miami than Pittsburgh.

Tick...Tick...Tick...

Yep, we keep creeping closer and closer to kicking off the 2009 NFL season and I have to say I have never, ever, ever been more excited about a regular season game than I am about the Titans and Steelers Thursday night. Having said that, this game means nothing to either team!

That’s right, it’s a 16 game season and these are 2 great teams. A loss won’t end either of their seasons and a win doesn’t make either of them Super Bowl champs. Well, the Steelers already are…

Every game in Pittsburgh is a “big deal”, football is what they do there! The key for the Titans is how they handle it. They can’t get caught up in the “towell hype”, sticking it to the fans, or focus on anything that isn’t the man in front of them. They’re better than a year ago, if they focus they still can have every expectation to beat the Steelers again.

That’s right. I think they’ll win. Jeff Fisher doesn’t own this team, but he is 12-7 against Pittsburgh and I can’t imagine there are a lot of coaches who can top that. This has always been one of his favorite match ups and he always has his team ready for the black and gold.

Turnovers doomed the Steelers last year at LP Field and they will likely decide the outcome Thursday. That’s just life in the NFL.

Are The Redskins Nuts?

A good friend of mine sent me an article in today’s Washington Post that absolutely defies all sanity? It seems the Washington Redskins are suing some of their fans! That’s right, in these economically challenged times some fans can’t meet their obligation to the team so they’re being sued.

OK, let me cut you off. I get it, a contract’s a contract but, really? Is suing your fan base really the best course of action? As I recall the Redskins have a fairly rabid fan base with a waiting list for tickets 5 years long.

I know we don’t always know the whole story, but the mere sight of this one made my skin crawl. Roger Goodell has done a great job of policing his players, maybe it’s time for a word with ownership?
