The only thing missing from Pro Bowl? Common sense!
Congratulations to the Titans phenom Chris Johnson on his second selection to the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster in 2 years. With a league leading 1,872 yards he is certainly worthy and is arguably the best ball carrier in the league today.
The Titans are (7-8) thru 15 games, that’s not the kind of record that sends a lot of players to the game and it didn’t for the Titans. C-J was their only selection. OK, let’s use our heads.
The Titans have the NFL’s leading rusher by over 500 yards and they’ve allowed the second fewest sacks in the NFL, that tells me the offensive line is getting it done. Mike Roos, Eugene Amano, Kevin Mawae, Jake Scott and David Stewart all deserve some applause as well and at least one of them a free trip to Miami with C-J.
Oh, let’s not forget fullback Ahmard Hall who paves the way play after play. Baltimore’s LeRon McClain is going instead, he’s a great player and carries the ball more, it’s that simple. Hall actually could get his due next year, his reputation could be stronger with a 2,000 yard rusher to his credit.
Not everyone can go, I get it, but I think the voters didn’t see the forest thru the trees.
Titans Simply Won't Die
Jeff Fisher deserves a lot of second guessing this season. He took a team that won 13 games last year and started 0-6. He’d never admit it, but he had a hand it. He’s also had a hand in the turnaround.
The head coach catches a lot of flack for his style, but it is absolutely what allowed them to turn it around. Think about it, they were 0-6 and had just lost 59-0 in arguably the worst effort in team history (no, thats not overly dramatic).
Since the buy week, they are a different team. Number one, they got healthy (the return of Finnegan, Fuller and Harper was HUGE). Number two, Vince Young entered the line-up and electrified the offense. Number three, Chris Johnson has rushed for 100 yards in every game since then. Number four, the head coach kept them all moving in the same direction.
If there was ever a time for a team to fracture and fall completely apart, this was it, but they didn’t and that’s coaching.
Today was another perfect example of it. The Titans watched a 24-6 lead disappear, but no one panicked, everyone kept playing and they won it.
It would be easy to look at this season and just say “what if”, because one more win would change anything. Maybe we need to appreciate it for what it is and that’s an amazing turnaround from a team that’s still in playoff contention at (7-7) with only 2 games to go.
Top 25 & Beyond
For the first time in my life I’m a voter in the A-P Top 25 Basketball Poll and let me just say it is WAY harder than I thought. I can always remember looking at that poll growing up and picking out all of the insane injustices that were there. Today though I have a new understanding.
First off their should be NO POLL until at least December 1st. It’s practically impossible to vote on teams that haven’t played or you haven’t even seen a highlight of.
Second, the top 15 isn’t so difficult. The best of the best tend to stand out, the rest that’s another story. I was agonizing over 16 thru 25 Sunday and could have filled out those 10 teams with at least 20 different names. In the end I just tried to go with my guy and ask myself who would beat who.
I have 2 goals, be as fair as possible and not to get called out by that guy on cbssportsline.com!!!
2,000 In Sight For C-J
I grew up in Chicago watching Walter Payton and to me the NFL starts and ends with number 34. He is the greatest football player I’ve ever watched, end of discussion. That’s what makes what I’m thinking so amazing, Chris Johnson could be the most electric back I’ve ever seen and is probably the best in the NFL.
I was extremely critical of Johnson the first month of the season. Even though he was producing big plays, yards and touchdowns I thought he was going for the “homerun” every time and in the process dancing around and turning in way too many negative plays.
The coaching staff will never admit it, but he was, and now he’s not. The negative plays are gone and I can’t find fault in anything he does with the football. He gets the tough yards, the big yards and the homerun!
Chris Johnson has over 1,500 yards after 12 games. Jeff Fisher said today only 2 other running backs have ever done that. I haven’t done the research at this point, but I won’t dispute him. 2,000 yards is certainly in sight. 200 yard games don’t happen often in this league, but with the Rams coming to town I keep feeling like I EXPECT C-J to go for 200 Sunday and that is ridiculous.
He has a long way to go to be the “best ever” in my eyes, but he certainly isn’t off to a bad start.
