Still Waiting for Confirmation From U-T
Still no definitive word on if David Cutcliffe is the new head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. Earlier today WFMY TV in North Carolina reported he had the job, but U-T hasn’t confirmed and Duke called the report “inaccurate”.
Cutcliffe is the MAN
WFMY in North Carolina is reporting David Cutcliffe is leaving Duke to be the new head coach of the Tennessee Vols.
Cutcliffe Picking Up Steam With U-T
Word is David Cutcliffe could be the next target for U-T. Cutcliffe reportedly spoke with his Athletic Director at Duke this morning and will speak with U-T A-D Mike Hamilton this afternoon after Air Force Coach Troy Calhoun pulled out of the running.
Strike 2 For U-T, Mabye 3?
Still no luck in the search for a Head Coach at the University of Tennessee. Last night News 2 reported Texas Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp turned the Vols down. Today Air Force Coach Troy Calhoun pulled out and announced he’s staying. We were led to believe David Cutcliffe, but that may not be over quite yet.
Who does that leave? Not Skip Holtz, he’s going to South Florida. Kevin Sumlin at Houston, Gary Patterson at TCU, Randy Edsall at UConn and we hear Houston Nutt is pushing hard for the opportunity.
Strike One! Muschamp Turns Down Vols
Give U-T Athletic Director Mike Hamilton credit, he swung for the fences as he looks to replace Lane Kiffin. Unfortunately, it appears he swung and miss.
Wednesday night News 2 learned that Texas Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp has turned down Tennessee’s offer to be the Vols new head coach. Earlier in the evening the two sides were reportedly very close, but there were issues over numbers and control, apparently they were issues that could not be resolved.
The question is where does Hamilton go from there. WATE’s Jim Wogan told us Hamilton was in Texas Wednesday night making TCU coach Gary Patterson an easy target. Other names that are sure to pop up are former U-T Offensive Coordinator David Cutcliffe, Skip Holtz from East Carolina, Randy Edsall from UConn, Kirby Smart at Alabama, Air Force Coach Troy Calhoun and Ole Miss’s Houston Nutt.
Kiffin Leaving For Southern Cal
An absolute stunner tonight from Knoxville! ESPN.com is reporting Lane Kiffin is leaving Tennessee to be the new head coach at the University of Southern California.
Kiffin will replace Pete Carroll who was officially introduced today as the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.
Kiffin spent just one season in Knoxville bringing in a top 10 recruiting class and leading the Vols to a 7-6 season including a Chick-Fil-A Bowl loss to Virginia Tech.
McGwire Comes Clean
It took a while but Mark McGwire finally came clean about steroids. After years of denial and avoiding the questions he admitted to using them for about 10 years during his career. Then he ruined it! Ruined is admission!
McGwire claimed he “only” took steroids to be healthy and feel better and not for strength. Oh, and he went on to say they didn’t make him a better hitter. So, he was hitting 580 foot homers before he took steroids? Oh, and that’s why he was choked up nearly in tears? Because he felt guilty about feeling better? Please!!! Who does he think he’s kidding? The only person he’s fooling is himself or the diehard Cardinal fan who’s prepared to believe anything their beloved slugger says.
Mark McGwire cheated, period. And he knows it…
Number One For A Day
Congratulations to Bruce Pearl and his Tennessee Volunteers for an absolutely amazing day and week in Knoxville. Down to just 6 scholarship players the Vols routed UNC-Charlotte then
stunned top ranked Kansas Sunday in Knoxville.
Doing the right thing isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but Pearl and Tennessee appear well on their way. Pearl dismissed Tyler Smith from the team for his role in the arrest of four U-T basketball players on drug and gun charges. Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams and Melvin Goins remain suspended and likely will not return this season if it all.
Sometimes doing the right thing can also pay off. I didn’t appear possible but this team
actually looks better now. They had walk-ons play 45 minutes against Kansas! Not against
Lenoir-Rhyne or Neverheardofyou State, Kansas! They played 45 hard, inspired minutes and
the 6 scholarship players played with a renewed passion and a chemistry we haven’t seen
in 2 years.
Let this be a lesson to everyone, do the right thing, the results just may surprise you!!!
CJ2K... Johnson Crosses Into History
Disappointing, depressing, amazing… Call it want you want, you can’t call the Titans season boring. From 0-6 to 8-8 was an impressive turnaround, but watching Chris Johnson go for 2,000 was special.
Only 5 have done it before him and in a pass happy age we may not see it again for a long, long time. So, take a few days and appreciate what you saw and the effort he gave whether the Titans were winning, losing, in the hunt or out of it. Chris Johnson is a football player and now he’s the face of the franchise.
The only thing missing from Pro Bowl? Common sense!
Congratulations to the Titans phenom Chris Johnson on his second selection to the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster in 2 years. With a league leading 1,872 yards he is certainly worthy and is arguably the best ball carrier in the league today.
The Titans are (7-8) thru 15 games, that’s not the kind of record that sends a lot of players to the game and it didn’t for the Titans. C-J was their only selection. OK, let’s use our heads.
The Titans have the NFL’s leading rusher by over 500 yards and they’ve allowed the second fewest sacks in the NFL, that tells me the offensive line is getting it done. Mike Roos, Eugene Amano, Kevin Mawae, Jake Scott and David Stewart all deserve some applause as well and at least one of them a free trip to Miami with C-J.
Oh, let’s not forget fullback Ahmard Hall who paves the way play after play. Baltimore’s LeRon McClain is going instead, he’s a great player and carries the ball more, it’s that simple. Hall actually could get his due next year, his reputation could be stronger with a 2,000 yard rusher to his credit.
Not everyone can go, I get it, but I think the voters didn’t see the forest thru the trees.
